A lot will depend on how much you are willing to spend, and what you already have available. Generally speaking, paper and pen is the cheapest way to start. Something as simple as pen and paper will do, but you may also want to consider using a filing system. If so, I suggest getting a folder that you might use for schoolwork and create a section in there for keeping your data.
You can also print or purchase family group sheets (FGR), such as the example above. This would be easier than individually formatting every page. Also, if you already have a printer then this would be the cheapest way to go. Otherwise, you can order such items online, and you will receive the pre-printed forms.
If you already have a laptop, smart phone, or tablet, you can also use a simple text editor such as Notepad or Notes.
Next week we will look at whether you can use a tablet to record your data.
